Over a Century Of Care.

Belverdale’s story begins in 1910, when Sr. Beatrice Brooks established the hospital with the backing of four local general practitioners.

Our history

Our story so far

Belverdale’s roots stretch back to 1910, and through more than a century of change we’ve held to one thing: providing quality private surgical care for our community. Here’s how we got from there to here.

Founded in 1910

Sr. Beatrice Brooks established the hospital with four local GPs, whose private surgery income helped subsidise their unpaid work at Wanganui Base Hospital.

Renewed and rebuilt

The Southern Cross Trust bought the building in 1986 and refurbished it in 1987, before an entirely new hospital was constructed in 1993.

Privately run through the decades

Ownership changed hands several times over the years, but Belverdale always remained a dedicated private surgical hospital for the community.

A new chapter in 2001

After Whanganui’s Southern Cross Hospital closed in 2000, local specialists stepped in — and Belverdale Hospital Ltd officially opened in February 2001.

Belverdale today

Now a 17-bed private surgical hospital with a modern theatre and endoscopy suite, quietly central and committed to quality care alongside the public system.
